Ingredients

For this simple chocolate cake recipe you will need the following ingredients:
2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda, one cup of butter, 1/2 cup of cocoa powder, 2 cups of sugar, 1 cup of buttermilk, 4 eggs, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.

Instructions

To begin, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a 9-inch round cake pan with butter or non-stick cooking spray. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside.

In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add the cocoa powder and mix until combined.

Next, add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients in three alternating additions. Start with 1/3 of the dry ingredients, mix well and then add 1/2 of the buttermilk. Add another 1/3 of the dry ingredients, mix again and then add the remaining buttermilk. Finally, add the remaining dry ingredients and mix until just combined.

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Remove the cake from the oven and let cool for 10-15 minutes before turning it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting

For the frosting, you will need 1/2 cup of butter, 2 cups of powdered sugar, 1/4 cup of cocoa powder, 3 tablespoons of milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Add the cocoa powder and mix until combined. Add the milk and vanilla extract and mix until combined.

Spread the frosting over the cooled cake and enjoy! The cake can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
