This southern layer cake recipe will make one 9-inch layer cake. Here are the ingredients you will need to make the cake:
- 3 cups cake flour
- 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup salted butter, softened
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1/4 cup light corn syrup
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup whole milk
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans and set aside.
In a medium bowl, sift together the cake flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing until each is fully incorporated. Add the corn syrup and vanilla, then mix until combined.
Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternately with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour, mixing until just combined after each addition. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool in the pans for 15 minutes, then invert onto a cooling rack to cool completely.

- 1/2 cup salted butter, softened
- 4 cups confectioners' sugar

- 3 to 4 tablespoons heavy cream
In a large bowl, cream the butter until light and fluffy. Add the confectioners' sugar, 1 cup at a time, mixing on low until combined. Add the vanilla and cream and mix until light and fluffy.
To assemble the cake, place one layer of cake on a serving plate. Spread the top with the frosting. Top with the second layer of cake and spread the remaining frosting on the top and sides of the cake.
