Ingredients
For the cake:

- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
For the cake
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and line two 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add in the eggs one at a time, beating until fully incorporated. Add in the vanilla extract.
Alternate adding the dry ingredients and the buttermilk to the wet ingredients, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Beat until just combined.
Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared pans. Bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

For the glaze
In a medium saucepan, combine the cream, butter, and sugar. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture comes to a boil. Boil for 1 minute, then remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Let cool slightly before assembling the cake.
To assemble
Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread the custard over the cake layer. Top with the second cake layer.
Spread the glaze over the top of the cake. Let cool completely before serving.
