You can get creative and create a unique train birthday cake that everyone will love. Here’s how to make it.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Chocolate frosting
  • Chocolate sprinkles
  • Gummy worms
  • Chocolate chips
  • Vanilla frosting
  • Colored sprinkles
  • Chocolate-covered pretzels
  • Red food coloring

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat together the butter and eggs until light and fluffy. Beat in the buttermilk and vanilla extract.
  4. Fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the two cake pans and spread out evenly. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Remove from oven and let cool for 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Spread a layer of chocolate frosting on the top of one of the cakes. Place the other cake on top.
  8. Spread a thin layer of chocolate frosting on the sides of the cake. This will act as the “glue” for the sprinkles.
  9. Sprinkle the sides of the cake with the chocolate sprinkles.
  10. To make the train wheels, spread a thin layer of vanilla frosting on the sides of the cake. Roll the gummy worms in the colored sprinkles to make the train wheels.
  11. Place the chocolate-covered pretzels on the sides of the cake to make the train tracks. Use a small dab of red food coloring to make the “train” on the tracks.
  12. Enjoy!
